How I Joined a Sword Guild

Ironically, it was while I was attending the weapons seminar in Leeds, England that I learned the Higgins Armory Museum is considered to be the best center for researching and practicing historical weapons techniques in the United States. If you're interested in museums, sword guilds, or other things related, check out my Links on this website.

In fact, the year before I went to England, several people from the Higgins Armory Museum had given presentations at the seminar in Leeds. What I find especially bizarre is that I found the European Historical Combat Guild before I discovered the Higgins Armory Museum! Then, of course, when I took my blacksmithing course, I learned my blacksmithing teacher had once been Director of the Higgins Armory Museum. Apparently, all roads lead to Higgins.

Upon returning to the United States, I completed my course in Fundamentals and took more courses. Once I finished writing and polishing my novel, I joined the Higgins Armory Sword Guild. In Spring 2004, I joined the ranks of guild members who give demonstrations at the museum.  I trained and gave demos on a regular basis for years.

To see part of a German longsword demo that my partner and I gave on a monthly basis at the Higgins Armory Museum, check out my Sword Videos on this website.

Magazine Article about the Higgins Armory Sword Guild

Live Steel magazine
September 2005

I wrote an article about The Higgins Armory Sword Guild for Live Steel magazine. It's in the September 2005 issue (Volume 1, Number 4). The article is about the how the guild was created and its goals. The magazine is available in both PDF format and in print.  I believe PDF copies are still available.  If you'd like to order a copy, see http://www.lulu.com/livesteel
